9th Grade Student Information Sheet: 2016-17
Welcome to the PACK! Hopefully you are adjusting to the early schedule and starting to get involved in high school. These next few years will go by faster than you think and it is best if you start planning for success early on. In order to do that you need to know what is required of you. Below is a list of the required credits, testing and grade point average in order to obtain a standard high school diploma in Lee County.
A total of at least 24 credits are required. Specifically, students need to pass the following courses:
4 credits English: English 1, English 2, English 3, English 4
4 credits Math: Must include Algebra 1 and Geometry
3 credits Science: Must include Biology
3 credits Social Studies: World History, US History, Economics with Financial Literacy, American Government
1 credit HOPE
1 credit Fine or Performing Art, or an approved Practical Arts course (Intro. To Information Technology)
8 credits Electives – many colleges require 2 consecutive years of the same Foreign Language
24 Total Credits
All students will be required to take 1 online course while in high school. This can be a semester course or a year-long course. Suggested sources are LVIP (http://lvip.leeschools.net) or FLVS (www.flvs.net) or Egenuity.
In addition, each student must have a minimum unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. The GPA is calculated using all of the grades a student receives throughout high school. Each grade is assigned a certain point: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0 points. These points are added up and then the total is divided by the number of grades. The result is your GPA.
Students must pass the Reading portion of the Grade 10 FSA ELA and the End of Course (EOC) exams in Algebra 1. The EOC’s in Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Biology, and US History count toward 30% of your final grade in those courses. It is important for all students to do as well as possible on their exams. The result of these exams will influence the student’s course selection for the following year. We strongly encourage all students to do their personal best.
Although it seems early to start thinking about life after high school, it is actually the right time to begin your exploration of career fields that may interest you. Two websites containing useful information are www.floridashines.org and www.bls.gov . These sites offer many ideas regarding different careers and the job market, and the educational requirements to be successful in that field.
It’s never too early to think about scholarships. There are many scholarships available to students, but it requires time and effort to seek them out. Some websites that we suggest reviewing are www.fastweb.com, www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org, & www.scholarships.com. Scholarship information is also available in the guidance area and in the counselor corner in the cafeteria.
Anytime you would like to see your counselor, please fill out a guidance slip which you can get in the cafeteria. She will call you down as quick as possible.

Grades, test scores (SAT, ACT, PERT) and community service will be evaluated to determine your eligibility. SFMHS Counselors will help students complete the initial application in December of their senior year.
